An Explanatory Study on Factors Affecting the Anxiety of Mothers of Hospitalized Children


Abstract
The purpose. of this study were.
1. To investigate the factors affecting the anxiety of mothers of hospitalized children.
2. To identify the relationship between personality (by HLOC) and anxiety.
3. To provide the basic data for intervening the anxiety.
The subjects consisted 82 mothers who have hospitalized children. The questionnaire survey was done from Jan. 24, to Feb. 4, 1988. The instrument was composed of Spiel berger¢¥s State Anxiety Scale and Walstone and Walston¢¥s MHLOC Scale. The data analyzed by ANOVA, Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficiency and multiple regression.
The results of this study were as follows;
1. The level of mother¢¥s anxiety according to mother¢¥s occupation showed significant different (P < 0.01), but the level of mother¢¥s anxiety according to mother¢¥s age, religion, economic level, residence, educational level, showed no significant difference.
2. The level of mother¢¥s anxiety according to child¢¥s hospital days, expecting hospital days, worries about admission showed significant difference, but the level of mother¢¥s anxiety according to child¢¥s age, route of admission, medical diagnosis, sex, number of siblings, birth order, showed no significant difference.
3.¢¥ The higher IHLOC was, the higher the level of anxiety, but there was no significant correlation (r= 0.2046, P > 0.01).
4. The higher PHLOC was, the higher the level of anxiety, and there was significant correlation (r= 0.2900, P < 0.01).
5. The higher CHLOC was, the lower the level of anxiety, but there was no significant correlation (r = -0.1010, P > 0.05).
6. Mother¢¥s anxiety was explained by mother¢¥s occupation, mother¢¥s personality (by HLOC), worries about admission, child¢¥s hospital days, and expecting hospital days on the level of 44 %.
